Lave Tet CeremonyAugust 2009, in Western Massachusetts. A Lave Tet Ceremony is a cleansing, invigorating purification and consecration of the head using traditional herbs and other substances. It clarifies consciousness, increases the ability to dream lucid or prophetic dreams, promotes healing, facilitates communication with the lwa, removes evil magic and "curses", improves finances and domestic life, and harmonizes the energy the person brings into daily activities. It is not a trivial service, but a deeply sacred one. You can register online for this ceremony, or email Mambo Racine for more information. Read about past lave tets: December 2001 in New Orleans and a participant's account of the May 2002 lave tet, also in New Orleans.
Fet Gede: The Feast of the AncestorsOctober 31 - November 4, in Jacmel, Haiti. Every year in Jacmel, the Vodouisant community observes the twin holy days of the Feast of All Saints and the Feast of All Souls, November 1 and 2. The ancestors manifest through possession constantly and everywhere during this Haitian national holiday. The Vodouisant community of Jacmel organizes a "Spiritual Procession" through the town, and then the Roots Without End Society peristyle presides over the sacred ceremonies of the ancestors - the solemn invocations and the raucous antics of the Gede lwa, their remarkable signature banda dance, their prophetic wisdom. Participants in the Fet Gede activities will be guided by Houngan Wolmer. You will learn ancestral service, songs, dances, invocations, sacred attributes and objects, correct food offerings - and you will learn the magical means by which the spirit of a departed person can be reclaimed from the grave!
