Houngan Wolmer is a Houngan of the Vodou religion. He is a Houngan asogwe, the highest grade in Vodou. Houngan Wolmer has been a Vodouisant from birth. He is a resident of the beautiful Haitian seacoast town of Jacmel. He first became a hounsi of the Roots Without End Society in July 2001, at which time he took the nom vayan, or sacred name, of hounsi Baka Nkisi Daginen (hounsi Monster of the Nkisi, of Guinea). In January 2003 his rank was elevated to that of Houngan asogwe, and his new nom vayan became Bon Houngan Ashade Jou A La Daginen (Good Houngan
Ashade The Day Has Come, of Guinea).
Houngan Wolmer serves powerful lwa, including Ogoun, Baron La Croix, and Ti-Jean Petro - who comes with fire, and munches on red-hot firewood!
During initiation ceremonies, Houngan Wolmer is papa kanzo, and becomes father to the new initiates. If you have initiation ceremonies in the Roots Without End Society in December 2008, Houngan Wolmer will teach you Vodou religious service and Vodou magic!
As a Houngan asogwe, Houngan Wolmer holds the highest rank in Vodou. When the Roots Without End Society holds a dance, Houngan Wolmer leads verses of the Priere Guinea, performs the sacred gestures of the asson, the sacred rattle of Vodou clergy; leads singing, invokes for and undergoes possession, and in short does all that is expected of a competent Houngan, before the watchful eyes of the men and women of his community. He is widely respected for his adherence to Vodou ceremonial discipline, his even temperament and his willingness to help others.
Houngan Wolmer became a hounsi in the Roots Without End Society just as we were forming the nucleus of our Haitian membership. His calm, peaceful, even humble manner was a blessing. He worked well in group settings, and so learned the many tasks and rituals attendant to running a Vodou house.
The highly competitive relationships among Houngans and Mambos means that every peristyle, if it is to succeed in attracting initiates and clients, must have members who are trustworthy. Hounsi Wolmer was never swayed by greed, never erred during a kanzo, never did anything to harm his house, his brothers and sisters, his initiator, the lwa... and so hounsi Wolmer, after two years of proving himself, was made Houngan!
When hounsi Wolmer was preparing for his kanzo, he expected to become a Houngan sur point, the priest of one particiular lwa. He underwent all the ceremonies of the kanzo, until the moment came for the suleliye, the ceremony at which Houngans and Mambos are given the asson, the sacred rattle, and attain the highest grade, that of asogwe. Since Houngan Wolmer was only to have the grade of sur point, he was not expecting to participate in this ceremony.
Hounsi Wolmer got the surprise of his life! I, Mambo Racine Sans Bout, said to him, "Come!" And that one word was enough to send him to his feet! Hounsi Wolmer became Houngan Wolmer that night. The other men of our house were wild with jealousy, because of course each man wants the asson. They said, "Oh HO! Ah HAH! Look who is a big Houngan now!" But Houngan Wolmer's open, meek comportment deflected all bad feeling, and he is until today one of the most beloved members of our house.
Houngan Wolmer enjoys working with international clients. At left, Houngan Wolmer teaches international members the service of the lwa Baron, including how to dance the banda! His patience and compassion for the universal human condition make him a particularly attentive magical worker. He works magic under the patronage of any one of three lwa - the powerful Rada lwa Ogoun, Master of the Machete; the mystical Baron La Croix; and the fire-breathing, terrifying and affectionate Ti-Jean Petro! He works for Haitian and international clients, and while he is the first to remind his clients that he is not God and can not guarantee results, he does in fact usually get results, and thus he is much sought-after in his community.
Houngan Wolmer often works for men who are trying to attract a particular love partner, and he has a reputation not only for competence but for confidentiality! Houngan Wolmer wouldn't have his reputation or his clientele if he gossiped about his clients! Houngan Wolmer also does love magic for women, and when women appear at his door, all the men in the neighborhood are on their P's and Q's, watching out for the consequences!
Houngan Wolmer does magical work for clients seeking prosperity, those with health issues, court cases, employment problems or other issues. Depending on which lwa he invokes, he makes the appropriate sacrifice. Ogoun's sacrifice must be a red male animal, either bull, ram goat or rooster, and if a goat or rooster, it must be accompanied by a female. But Ti-Jean Petro's sacrifice is the black male pig of the Petro rite, and Baron is fed with staple foods such as bread and coffee even before his black rooster or black ram goat, each with a female to complete the pair, are given to him.
Animal sacrifice is not "cruel" or morbid. The animals are quickly and mercifully killed just as they would be by a commercial butcher. The life energy of the animal is given to the lwa, and the meat is for the hungry congregation. Goat hides make drums, chicken feathers make ritual implements, indigestible tripe is fed to the dogs. Nothing is wasted.

These illuminations require many, many candles, and they are beautiful to behold. Each lwa requires its own type of candle - white for the Rada lwa, yellow beeswax boujis for the Petro, and black boujis for Baron.
