Works Magic!
Photos from a Leaf Ceremony
These photos were taken during a recent ceremony. They show what a Vodou ceremony using leaves can be like. I love the leaves! They have power, even down to the last little blade of grass, it has power. If it had no power, how could the cows eat it and live?
To be a medsen fey, a Vodou herbalist, is something that you grow into. You learn, you dream and you work magic, you try to help people. I always tell people who are sick to go to the doctor, but the power of our leaves and of the ceremonies we perform, is undeniable. When we invoke the healing lwa of Vodou, they come, and they transmit energy into the leaves.

At the beginning of the ceremony, we wanted to cleanse and purify the peristyle to make it ready for the sacred energy we would soon invoke. I rose before dawn and went out into the bush, and brought back good herbs. By early morning I returned, and I put a light blue kerchief around my neck to honor La Sirene, who after God is the ruler of the Roots Without End Society peristyle. And I tied a green kerchief around my waist to honor the lwa Grand Bwa. Some members of the Roots Without End Society were already in the peristyle, and when they saw me coming they came to meet me. The drummers began to play, and I led the procession into the peristyle.

I love to work with leaves! I felt happy as I led the procession, and I took a bottle of herbal infusion out of my straw bag to pour a libation to the lwa.

Then my lwa came! Once I am possessed by a lwa, of course I don't remember anything, but Mambo Racine took this photo of my lwa as it saluted her and the other Houngans and Mambos present.

Then my lwa saluted the poto mitan, the centerpost of the peristyle, with herbs, candles, and machete. It swept the poto mitan and the area around it with a bundle of herbs, and promised a very good year in 2006! Everyone was happy, and before the lwa went away it gave everyone a drink of the herbal infusion to make them strong and healthy.

The leaves I gather for you are prepared in just the same way as you see in these pictures. They are dried and pounded, and then charged with specific properties by the lwa.
